What subs will work?

Post by kevio180 »

Hi guys, I just bought a LEGACY 1600W Amp 4 channels x 400W.

Now I have no idea about subs and amps so I have to ask.

Does that mean the subs I get has to be 400W subs? If that, I guess I have to get 4 subs then.

Or, can I get 2 subs that are 800W? so I can just get 2 x 12"s

Thanks

You bought an Amp and didnt know what you would be buying afterwards??

Thats scary man.

If you have extra money- send it to me. My zip code is 30144. Please PM me for shipping details.

All joking aside- thats probably overkill for the MX-3. Okay, so 1600W is the MAX output...What is the real-time output of the amp?

ehhhh not really. Whats the RMS output of that amp? Legacy's tend to be reallly overrated

I have to check once it gets here, should be next week. The highest 12"s I found that are legacy are 1200W max and 600W RMS, I have no idea what fits what, so I guess I have to wait until the amp gets here. thanks

This is what I found on the net for this amp, and I don't understand it a bit

Power output
50 watts RMS x 4 (4 Ohm load)
85 watts RMS x 4 (2 Ohm load)
400 watts x 4 max output
800 watts x 2 max output (bridge mode)
400 watts x 2 + 800 watts x 1 max output (stereo + bridge mono mode)

I guess this is really the question I'm asking

If I bridge the channels into 2 x 800W Channels, so it produces 800W max out put though that, can I hook up a 1000W max out put Sub by Legacy to it? does 1000W max out put on a sub means it can handle anything thats 1000W and under? Will it blow the sub or cause any damage to anything? Or I need to buy subs under 800W max?

Thanks

get two good name (nothing like thump) 12" subs in a sealed box. Then get any subs that have a max wattage of about 200-500watts.

I always recommended either infinity reference, MTX MZS's, rockford fosgate P2's, eclipse or JL (just not their low end stuff).

let us know how it turns out like - what size wire u used, what kind of RCA's, what kind of deck u have, how big the box is, ported or sealed.......etc.

good luck

Ahhhh....I understand now, 800W max out put on amp will work better for subs that have lower max output than that, right? Now I understand, cool, thanks.

I'm just putting a hard wood cover on the trunk instead of the cargo cover, and make 2 boxes under it and seal it so the sub will work fine and I can still get to my spare tire, hehe. I bought the wire kit for the amp so I guess that should work, and I also have a dvd screen and a player, both indash coming in, some brand I forgot, lol, but did get good reviews on Tibruon Forums, so I guess its ok. I have enough cash to do a engine swap, but its getting so cold outside and I live in a aprtment, student so yeah, no grage, rather do it in the summer when I get back home.

Thanks for the advise, I will look for some of those subs you metioned

if it's 4x50W rms @ 4ohms, you probably have 2x200W rms @ 4ohms if you bridge the fronts together and bridge the rears together. I am running very similar output and use 2 x rockford 10" p2's in custom sealed fiberglass boxes. i love the sound. i think you're in ottawa, right? send me a pm and i can show you my setup.

yeah, your 4 ohm bridge wil be the same output as 2 channels cobined @ 2 ohms (85 x 2 = 170 RMS)...so your output power is supposivly 170 X 2 RMS double bridge.. Dont worry about the subs. Legacy is all about the "max power BS" so just buy the ones with the highest RMS rating, if you can find that rating. Any sub will sound the same for what you are lookin for. Get two 10's or 2 12's in a sealed or ported box and dont spend too much...

Just so you know:

MAX power is complete crap!...it means nothing but what the amp will do right before it blows up. The RMS power rating on both subs and amps is the best means of rating the power output (even this can be stretched alot) RMS is the amount the amp puts out, period. MAX and PEAK power are just grossly inflated numbers so people who dont know anything will buy them.

cool, thanks for the input. So if RMS is 175W, do I only buy subs are has RPM that are 175W and lower? Or is the Forsigate P2s rated at 200W rms ok for it? thanks

although you'll probably never hit 350W rms (175 x 2) in our car, you should normally get subs that are rated slightly higher than the amp to avoid the risk of blowing your subs. this is not to say that you will never blow a sub, it just helps to play it safe.

stay with the fosgates and get a better amp sorry but legacy amps aren't all that great for driving subs and a 4 channel amp at that your better off getting a mono block amp for your subs and using the 4 channel for your speakers just rember to turn down the gain so you don't cook your speakers
