Transmission Question

Post by shawno »

My buddy is looking in too a 92 mx-3, the body is mint and the engine was rebuilt like 2 months ago so its good, its a 4 banger. but the k/m on the it is over 500,000 km but mostly hwy k/m. I was just wondering about the 5 speed tranny would it still be good. how many km do they last for, would it be time for a rebuild.

If he has a four banger why did you post this in the V6 forum??? LOL
The tranny is impossible to tell without a drive. Try shifting without using the clutch, if you are good at that. If it is easy or about normal then the synchros are in good shape. (you are basically relying on the synchros to do all the work instead of getting the clutch involved, doing this alot over time will wear the synchros out so don't do it unless you have to) Other than that a tranny dope drain and refill will tell you alot also. If the previous owner was poor at driving stick or was hard on it you'll find some metal shavings in the old tranny oil (use a magnet and swich it around in the old fluid, it will pick up metal particles if there are any, any more than a slight amount is not good) All tranny's will have some metal in the fluid, but if it is changed regularly and the driver down't abuse the car then it will be a small amount. The last test is to rev the car and dump the clutch, does it still grab or does it slip??? That will tell you something about the clutch: good/bad. You can also find a good hill and slow down then downshift and see if the clutch will still grab. If it still grabs then it is still probably ok. (also note that the rev and dump is not a good idea, but one of the few ways to test a clutch that you know nothing about, it can damage the clutch if you rev too high or let it burn-out after you dump the clutch. Just after it grabs let off the gas.
