Distributor Mod.

Post by lastkiwi »

Iv'e got only a very weak spark & can't start. Prior to this the egine would just diie on me but could start again . Gradually got worse.
Everything points to the usual MX3 Dist. failure so I'm going to do the Dist Mod outlined by Grow Harlem.
The instructions don't mention anything about disconnecting the failed part. Is this necessary & where in the Dist. is it?

Dist Mod.

Post by lastkiwi »

No the only thing it says about disconnection is REMOVING the STRAP to the COIL.
I'm not doing the COIL REPLACEMENT part ,just doing the first stage & that is putting a 4 pin HEI in the system EXTERNALLY.
So do I remove the internal one or just cut a strap ?
Hope this is clear as I"m still a bit in the dark over this one.

His write-up says to cut the straptothe old coil, inside the disty. That's the main reason for Mx3 disty failures. I don't believe it will work by just hooking up an external HEI module.

HEI Module

Post by lastkiwi »

I,m putting the Hei [ Wells D100 ] in my Mxs tommorow. All the postings I have checked out in this Forum say that it is the module that fails. That is where I,m starting anyway so will know tommorrow.

YOU DO NOT NEED AN EXTERNAL COIL TO DO THIS MOD!!

Damn doesn't anyone read the how-to?

It has two procedures: one for doing it with external coil, one without

The only part i gotta edit is the part wehre i say "splice into the 6th disty wire" b/c u apparently are supposed to just cut the wire not splice

Say what?
We are supposed to cut one of the wires? I've been having some issues past 110 km/h (engine cutting out like before except not as bad.) is there something you want to change from the initial instructions for an HEI mod, without the external coil?

Ok, I read the PT forums and went ahead and cut that wire. Now Im going to take it for a cruise to see if I can go past 110 for a few minutes.

Okay, I just got back from the test. I took the car up to 150 and held it there for about 5 minutes. The car did not cut out. I cut that 6th wire, and now the mod works fine. Prior to this, I was unable to steadily go past 110km/h. I though for sure I had a faulty external HEI or that the connections were not good enough. Turns out it was just the fact that the old, faulty one was still connected in tandem.

Now, my question is how did no one else have this problem if they followed the instructions that gro made? Are we just now learning that the 6th wire needed to be sliced, not spliced? It makes sense to me, and I always wondered why we would leave a broken HEI connected.

So I guess we need to update the FAQ. Great mod though!

HEI Module

Post by lastkiwi »

IT WORKS !!!!
Thanks all for your input. My MX3 would not start at all so I guess the part has died completely.
I did the MOD. today . Turned the key & it starts perfectly.
I haven't cut the sixth wire .
If I have to cut the sixth wire WHERE DO I cut it?? Do YOu have the wire connected in to the LOOM or connected into the DIST ?

It seems to me, from my experience. That the mod without cutting the wire only helps things a certain amount. When the cut the wire, it runs perfect. I cut the wire 1" from where it enters the harness.
