Bringing over from Canada
Bringing over from Canada
I'm looking at getting an mx-3 from canada and running over to pick it up. Does anyone know about whether there are any teriffs or fees or anything? Or do you know where I can find it?
Thanks

just make sure it has air bags or for some odd reason has auto seatbelts.. I just moved to michigan from ontario and I wasn't able to take my mx-3 (93 GS) with me because it didn't meet the safety standards for passive restraints (aka auto seatbelts or air bags).. basically i wouldnt have been able to register it because of the lack of passive restraints. Good luck though

thats pretty funny that u need the crappy seatbelts in order to register it in the states, and the airbags?? as far as i know in canada anyways finding one with airbags is a rarity, not the same in the states?

Ya wouldn't get a "seatbelt ticket" for having your car in the states while reg'd in Canada but if ya tried to register it in a US state, the vehicle inspection would be failed so you couldn't get tags or a US/state title issued. U.S. regs required a passive restraint system which means a restraint system that doesn't require driver intervention to "activate", i.e. automatic motorized seatbelts or airbags. Cars sold in the US during those early-mid '90's years had to have one or the other. Haven't seen motorized seatbelts on any U.S. sold car since maybe '94. Automakers went to airbags instead.
IMHO, it's good to have checked with Mazda for their advice but would prefer to take the last word on this from the state Motor Vehicle Admin office of whatever state I was intending on registering the car... my .02 and advice worth no more than the price

the states told me to contact Mazda USA to tell me if my car met the US safety standards.. it was specific for the VIN of the vehicle, and unfortunately it didnt' meet the requirements so i had to sell it. I"d hate to see someone buy a car in Canada and not be able to register it in the states... just speaking from experience.

There must be a statute of limitations wrt seatbelt specs after a vehicle hits a certain age.neutral wrote:Ya wouldn't get a "seatbelt ticket" for having your car in the states while reg'd in Canada but if ya tried to register it in a US state, the vehicle inspection would be failed so you couldn't get tags or a US/state title issued.
