Engine Cleaning

Post by killerpickle »

Okay, so its not the greatest picture because my camera is shite, and the lighting was so so...but in person its incredible. Look closely at the hoses and such that are normally dull, and the intake pipe too.

Tools used to do this task.

2 microfibre cloths from the dollar store.
1500 grit sandpaper to polish up the intake manifold and the valve cover.
Plastic shopping bags
Masking tape (to hold the bags over the sensitive electronics.)
Can of motomaster foaming engine cleaner.
Can of motomaster engine finish/clear coat
And lots of water.

Steps:

1) Ensure the engine is cool to the touch.
2) Cover the distributer, power distribution, and air intake and any other obvious electronics...harnesses dont count.
3) Soak the engine with the foaming engine cleaner. The whole can.
4) Let the cleaner soak in for a good 15 minutes.
5) Scrub any areas where there is built up grease, consider using the 1500 grit sandpaper to polish up metal while the cleaner is on.
6) With a light stream of water from a hose, wash the cleaner off, making sure that you get all of the cleaner off and not to put to much water near sensitive areas such as the plug wires and the like.
7) Take a microfibre cloth or two and dry the engine, also removing anything missed by the hose. Ensure the engine is as clean as you want it.
8 ) Ensure thare are no cars nearby, and the engine is dry, and liberally spray the engine finish over all parts of the engine. Use light/medium coats. Do at least 3-4 coats.
9) Let the engine dry for at least 2 hours or more.

Its been about 3 weeks since I did mine and it still looks shiney
