Alright I've done some searching and couldn't find anything with the search engine here.
I'm trying to compare the 1.8L 90-96 to the 97-04... and I've found this out:
Everything is the same engine wise, except that the 90-96 is hyraulic and the 97-04 is non-hydraulic.
Has anyeone looked into swapping the 97-04 1.8L and will an engine swap work?... I'd like to have the non-hydraulic engine for performance reasons.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second question, I blew my engine on my '96 1.6L DOHC last year... so all that was still good was the head.
I work at a machine shop so I have access to some specs... and I've noticed that my head is the same as the 90-96 1.8L BP engines. This is due to cross referencing the casting numbers on my head. My head is a BP05 casting number.
Is this true?
So if I was to do a BP swap... I'd only need a short block, speaking for what I'd need engine wise?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone have the casting numbers off the Head and Block on the 1.8L 90-96 BP engine?
Does anyone have the casting numbers off the Head and Block on the 1.8L 97-04 engine?
Is the 1.8L 97-04 engine a BP engine as well?

well i think it depends on what car the engine came out of. In 94 the Miata's started using 1.8 in their cars, but i beleive that engine would be the regular BP's father, as it has the Variable Valve Timing people are dieing to put in the Mx-3 and protege. But i know the oil pan is different, as well as a few other parts that would have to be changed to fit in our cars. As for the 97 and up protege 1.8, i think the newer one will be a bit harder to put in because of all the electricall crap. I know they have the distributorless ignition, so you would probably have to change the ecu AND wireing harness..... If i'm wrong about any of this, remember it say's "i THINK"

BP01 is the head
BP05 is the block
the 94-97 miatas are basically the same block. The accessories and intake/exhaust manifold all are wrong and wont fit.
99 miatas have the solid lifters and cams and are what most BP owners keep their eye out for.
00 and up miatas have the VVT that domn. was talking about and it would require creating your own system to run it, or getting the Miata ecu to somehow work. Huge PITA.
Yes the 94-04 is the same *basic block* but with everything from major to minor differences as I said above.
I assume by 90-96 you mean the Escort GT, or the LX...
We got the BP's in OBD-II in some of the 2nd gen protege ES trim models (in the US) which were made until 98, when Mazda came out with the 3rd gen and started using the FS motor.
Search on clubprotege.com and there is ALOT of info covering this... I am basically summarizing it for you as best I can.
Not that you can use the RWD tranny in a FWD car, but why would you prefer non-hydrolic over hydrolic... hydro trannies have been proven to take more abuse and be stronger in race applications. To each his own I guess though.
I have always heard that the b6 head wont fit onto the BP block because of the physical size difference. A bunch of the guys over off of mazda323performance.com have told me before that it wont. You could always give it a shot and try for yourself though

You can't swap the head over from the 1.6 B6 onto the 1.8 BP engine. The BP is 22mm longer so the heads will not interchange.
All 1.8 engines will be designated as a BP.
You can use the solid lifters on the 1.6 DOHC, any 1.8 DOHC, and even the K series v-6 engines. All of the lifter bores are the same diameter and for the most part, the same part number. That makes swapping that much easier. Mazda did good with this.

Thanks for the information guys...
I just have one dispute tho, on my 1996 1.6L DOHC head it physically says BP05 cast into the head.
What's the head number of the 1.8L?

I am positive it is off the 1.6L engine, I think it's the 1.8L head on the 1.6L block. Would not surprise me as most of the difference is mostly in the bore and stroke between the 1.6 and the 1.8L.
I will try and borrow my friends digicam... but also remember it's off the 1996 (last year in Canada).
