Junk Yard turbo's for the K8?

Post by Teal_93 »

What kind of cars if any in a junk yard would have a turbo big enough for a K8 or KLDE?

I am gonna be adding a turbo to my K8, but I need a headsup for what kind of cars to look for?

Can anyone help??????

k8 would most likley use a different turbo to the klde
because the displacement is different one flows alot more air.

k8 your probably looking at a t3 and the klde more along the lines of a t3/t04 hybrid.

also for the k8 you can use smaller displacement turbos like the t28 or the t25,

or even the 2.0 ltr engine turbos your find on mitsus and crap like that.

It really all depends on what you want out of it.

Any turbo will do but, too big is useless unless you have a built motor to withstand that beating. 5-7 lbs on a stock motor is probably the max I'd go on it. Larger turbos take longer to spool, smaller turbos of course spin up much faster. So go for something small if you dont plan on building the motor for turboing.

Do you guys think a VJ-11 off a Probe/MX-6 would be good enough?

it wasnt a 2.0. It was a 2.2L.

that VJ11 turbo sucks. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. I used to have a 1st gen MX6 turbo and I blew those turbos daily. They are weak and the shaft snaps when you spin them too fast.

I say a T3 for the K8 for anything under 10 psi. As for the KLDE, depends on how much boost you run. I run a T3/T04B S trim and it is laggy but it will be sufficient for pushing 15 psi like I will. Not to mention, T3 footprints are so common. Cheaper to upgrade, tons of options, and theyre everywhere.

That was just my oppinoin. Oh. and sorry about the .02L's I was off there. I havent seen a turbo probe in about 5 or 6 years. Sure a t3 is fine, and way more reliable than a vj11 or vj16, but in "junk yards" I doubt you'd find too many t3's. Vj11's and 16's are readiy available in numerous junkyard vehicals and are fairly common. Which means rebuild kits are a bit cheaper and easier to get a hold of. Again forums are all about oppinions, and these are mine.

I dunno bout you, but I see tons of volvo's, tbirds, and saab's with T3's in junkyards. T3's are cheaper to rebuild than a VJ11 too.

Last T3 I bought I told them it was bad and got it for $25 at a local yard.

What years might any of the above mentioned be? I would prefer a T3 as stated since they are easier to be upgraded & parts are everywhere.

I am looking at adding a turbo to my stock K8, running 5 to 7psi. Then in the mean time, I have a spare K8 that I'm looking at building the bottom end so I can really turn up the boost. That way everything is already setup & all I would have to do is swap motors.

I want to make sure everything is gonna run well before I spend a ton of money on a motor. LOL

as far where to find T3's in the j/y, I should prolly let rebel2k4 answer, since he obviously has had more expierence with this stuff than me. I believe that the mid 80's t-bird "turbo coupe" has the t3(and also a pretty sweet, yet small intercooler) Most older (mid 80's to early 90's) volvo's with the "turbo" badge on the trunk will also have the t3. Haven't seen any Saab turbo's around here, so not sure. It may be just my area, but I have seen way more eclipse/talon's, probe turbos, etc. in the local j/y's around here. Surely I would reccomend the t3, but I have never had luck finding one in the j/y's around here. I got one years ago from a t-bird and it needed a rebuild badly. I couldn't get my hands on a kit for under 75 bucks so I sold it to a friend and decided to spend the big bucks getting a t3/t4 hybrid. Good luck Cory!

Good list. Also try turbo dodge and chrysler minivans, shadows, etc. Those are everywhere. Theres a mitsubishi turbo and the T3. Make sure you get the T3. If it says Garrett .42 on the compressor housing, you know you have the right one.

As for saabs, I've seen the T3's from the mid 80's to early 90's on those. Very common in my yards around here.

Also 84-87 nissan 300zx turbo. These are a bit harder to get out though. 88-89 had a T25.

And as with any junkyard turbo, make sure you check shaft/end play and that it spins freely before you pull it.
