HOW TO TELL IF IT'S AN LSD BOX ?

Post by bigtime »

hey peoples.. i looked at a mx6 front cut a couple of days ago...

The guys there were trying to tell me it was the klze with an lsd box....
It had the ze throttle body...
Then when they said try turnig 1 wheel and see what the other does....
Yeah that means its got lsd !!!
Damn people just trying to sell what they can..

Then i noticed the ECU was the KF50.... They're off the KFZE right ?
I got the chassis numbers and went home and did some research... The jap mx6's had both the 2L and 2.5L ZE and this is the 2L and they were'nt made with an LSD box... Damn
I wanna get a good klze with an LSD box... keep looking i guess..

So does anyone KNOW how to tell if the box has LSD or not ?
Thanks guys..

To check for LSD

What you can do is look through the shafts where the axels enter. You should be able to look all the way through and see nothing but the other side. Your fingers should touch if you put one through each hole. If they touch or you can see all the way through to the other side, you have yourself an LSD :D . If you cant see the the other side clearly or when you put your fingers in and they touch a bar coming down the middle of the axel holes then it is not LSD. That is how i found out. The other way is when it is mounted to the engine and in the car turn one wheel and the other is suppose to go the same direction as the wheel you are turning.
Its not about how fast it goes, but about how well you drive it when it goes fast.

With both tires off the ground, tranny in neutral, turn one of the wheels by hand. W/an open diff, the opposite wheel should spin in the opposite direction , but w/LSD the opposite wheel may not move until ~1/2-a-turn & then it will start to spin in the same direction as the wheel being turned by hand. Go easy, short, and slow doing this because the geometry of your 1/2 axles is pretty exaggerated w/wheels off the ground.

Zips out to the barn at 3.30am , next door must think im insane and has
a look though the diff, pokes in finger, will tomoorow put a axle back in
and test the theory.......

And if that theory is right ive got a LSD myself, and missed one at the
wreakers.......GRRRRRRR..............

Ok you can pour cold water on the look right through the '
diff theory, mine you can see right through and its not a LSD

You can look inside throught the speed sensor port and turn the
main input shaft and look to see the spider gears in the diff housing.

Yeah, wondered about the "look right through" theory too. But wasn't positive so didn't comment on that before. Seems it should be the other way around. If you can look right through = No LSD and if you can't look through to other side =LSD cuz the LSD provides an additional mechanism/plates that would block the view.
