We had a thread on this a while back. I think someone had a good suggestion that it meant "Mazda eXperiment" Could make sense. Our cars were way ahead of their time.

Well, RX-7 stands for rotary experiment for sure so I am guessing mx is mazda experiment, although on the old post someone seemed sure that it was mazda xtreme. Maybe they r just letters that make it seem sporty?

mazda experimental
the "r" used in "type-r" is usually meant for "racing" spec or something

Has anyone thought to ask MAZDA what MX really stood for?

Has anyone gone through the "History of Mazda" web sites to see if there is any information on this?

Has anyone noticed i'm asking rather "stooopid" questions?

Maybe MX stands for:

Magnificient Xstacy (yeah, I know it's Ecstasy - maybe the designer didn't)

Mazda Xcalibur? (Series? They all have sharp cutting noses :P )

Mazda X-File (C'mon, ya gotta admit, our rides are out of this world 8) )

Mazda seX (Geddit? It puts the "X" into sex on wheels)

Mazda X-Car (As in X-Men - Mutant Coupes in a Hard Shell :D )

Well, since our cars came and went, anyone far from Mazda Japan that worked in the 90's wouldn't know...however, we do have a second shot at this. Overseas, Mazda still uses the MX prefix, such as the MX Sportif and MX Micro Sport, as well as the MX Tourer and MX Crossport concepts, as well as the Miata still carrying the MX-5 name.

We can still find out, we just have to find the right people.

On a site note, while looking to see if i can find a definition, i stubled across this Mazda Rotary Prototype called the MX-03

It's seems weird on how our cars could have roots from a rotary based car, but it's Mazda's own naming scheme from the same time period.
It seems that their prototypes from the 80's followed this naming scheme, including the MX-01, MX-02 (1983), MX-03 (1985). Maybe it's in reserching these prototypes that we may find the origin and definition of MX.
