Fails Exhaust Emissions Test?

My 1997 MX-3 1.8 fails Exhaust Emissions Test, What gives, I've just got the car and put it in for a MOT and it Faild, Help.
The car has just done 60,000 Miles and has had it's full servis done buy Mazda at 58,000 Miles a year a go.
Do I need to cheak:

Ignition Timing?
Timing belt is fitted properly????
Air filter Elermint is clean.
Spark Plugs and Gaping set right
Cheak ECU Code's ??
Catalytic Converter?

Uhm, they should have given you a slip that told you why it failed..... atleast up in canada at emissions testing they do. The slip will tell you the acceptalbe #'s , and will tell you your #'s. It could be anything, thats why you get the slip. Before I bought my car the dealer asked if I wanted to take it to get aircared, I let him do it and he had to replace the catalytic converter on his coin rather than mine. So get those #'s and we will be able to help you out.

You only put 2000 miles on in a year? Sounds like it needs an Italian tuneup.

Ternd out that there equipment was some what out of Calibration :x
All is fine now and it passt realy well :) 8)
