Glass Headlight Lenses?

Post by mxtreme38 »

I think I remember hearing about glass headlight lenses. I'd like to replace my dull plastic lenses w/ glass ones if they exist. Can anyone help me out w/ some info(location, prices Etc.)? Thanks. mxtreme38@yahoo.com" target="_blank

Either you get them shipped form Europe, or find a glass shop that can do custom work.

I would recomend against getting a glass shop to make the lenses for you, UNLESS they match every single rib and groove that the stock plastic lense has.

Without them, you'd be better off driving with a flashlight.

Source out ECE headlamps if you want glass headlights.

Or, do some projector conversion and THEN get some custom glass lenses made.

Make sure if you make the lenses from glass, they are from tempered glass, otherwise, one stone and they are gone. I would rather get E-code lights.

do the Euro lamps pass the codes here? I would bet they are still tons safer than most custom ones that can be made, but I was just curious if they pass in the states.

Well, I know for a fact that in Canada you are allowed to run ECE lamps without modification and can import them straight over.

In the USA, I would have to say no, they are not legal - here's a few facts about them:

1.) They have a flare that looks similar to this \___ to light up street signs better in low beam. However, since they drive on the "wrong" side of the road over there the flare will be on the incorrect side as needed for DOT specification to comply with North American roads. It would need to look like this ___/ to work here. So, it would just blind on-comming drivers more and potentially cause accidents.

It would be eggagerated even more with some stupid HID kit in there too.

The ECE and J-Spec headlights use H4 bulbs by the way, not 9004. H4 has better light ouput and a better filament design, so they rock.

2.) They DO have a very nice sharp cut-off for low beam, and produce better light output generally because of higher quality optics.

3.) The flare can be modified to comply with DOT rules, however, you really have to know what you're doing and you don't get a second chance.

Now, they MAY in fact be legal in your state. You should check the local rules first and find out. I do know for a fact though that some states don't allow ECE lamps.

Also, good luck sourcing some out too. I could give you a contact that I found who deals directly with importing ECE lamps to the USA, but he was unable to source some out for me at the end of last year.

I tried emailing some U.K. MX-3 members too about it, but they never emailed me back. You could try and see if you get a better response. They could check junkyards for you as there would be some there, or order new ones from a dealer there.

True, True,

E-code lights are legal in Canada, but not in US. Chances are that if you get E-code lamps and run them in US with normal colour bulbs, no one will care, because you will not blind people and will not stand out from the crowd. Just make sure that you get E-code and not J-spec. Also proper aiming is a must with E-codes. Just don't get no funny colour bulbs, they will just diminish the output of your H4. Harness might help as well at getting your output at 14v or so.

Aiden, I am a bit confused with your flare points. E-codes have correct flare, J-spec/AUS/UK do not.

Hi all:

As far as I know as least some of the Euro countries drive on the right side of the road. My father's got a position in Belgium for his job and they drive on the same side we do. I'm currently trying to convince him to look into headlights for me :)

The sockets between 9004 and H4 are completely different. The wiring is exactly the same however.

So, are you looking for higher wattage blue bulbs, or non-blue bulbs? I couldn't exactly figure out what you wanted there.

Ok, well my projectors have a flare that looks like this ___/ whereas, as far as I can remember, you're projectors have a tab on the side (a switch) that can make the flare change from ___/ to \___. That's how I thought ECE projectors were so people who drive from France to the U.K. wont run into problems.

And all the ECE headlights (reflector housings, not projectors) I've see pictures of have the \___ for driving on the left hand side of the road.

Hey Guys. I appreciate all the info' about the lights. I just want to know if anyone has bought them before and if anyone knows where to purchase a pair. Ex. Web site, cost, possible alterations to my car I'd have to make, etc. I'm just sick of pollishing those plastic lenses. I live in Maine so I'm not worried about legal headlight brightness. Thanks again for the info.

I don't remember any posts about imported ECE headlights in North America.

Try emailing people in the U.K. from the forum and asking them to take some pictures, or give you impressions about them.

Why would headlight brightness not matter if you live in Maine???

Headlight brightness isn't a real important factor in maine, as far as inspection. The state police hate those interior and undercarrige neon lights though. I'm willing to spend the $ for the glass lenses if anyone has any.

It should be.

What's the reason you want ECE headlights so much?

For the money involved finding them, getting them over here and everything else involved there are better options.
