Auto trans beef up?

Hey guys I'm undecided of what to do next to my MX-3 and was wondering what you guys think I should : A) A-Spec will do a tranny swap for me for $1800-2500 (auto-stick) B) take roughly the same amount and beef up my current trans to be stupidly faaaasst

C) forget both and throw in nos

I hope to store it away again this winter to save some $$$ [img]shrug.gif"%20border="0[/img]

I called A-spec cause I want to do a swap and they told me last year that they could put in the 323 gt(5speed) for $1600 cdn to $2000.[ October 16, 2002: Message edited by: mx3vs ]

My personal opinion would be to keep the automatic, only because i'm a crappy manual driver lol. If you're lookin at keep the car for the long haul i would suggest switching to a 5 speed if your daily driving habits could handle it. No matter how beefed up an auto tranny is there is still the chance of missing a gear and causing some sort of other failure. 5 speed is more cost effective near end (gas mileage) and far end.

But it will bring my 1/4 times down! This, my train of thought... That's why I also suggested beefin up the auto. What would be faster a five speed with a lightened flywheel and stage three clutch or a beefed up auto with a shift kit?

Faster is the top end, the auto will be faster. Quick is what gives 1/4 mile times. The stick will be quicker.

If you had a beefed up auto thats 100% efficient and optimized for your particular style of driving (top end, drag) then the auto will win hands down. An auto tranny shifts faster than anyone can shift with there hand. Now as far as how much it would cost to beef it up to that point maybe more than what you're looking at spending. You're probably looking at ~$5000 on top of what you've already done to get your tranny 100% efficient and optimized. It could be less however, i'm pretty much just pulling that number out of the airGood luck with whatever you decide and keep us posted!

Once my Auto tranny goes I am going to do the manual swap probably at Aspec since the price is about what you would pay for a new Automatic anyways.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I would agree with you, but as we all know, your "driving style" changes every trip down the track. I have only seen one drag automatic that was on a CRX. That was because they don't allow as much low end torque so that it has less wheel spin off the line. IF the automatic was a quicker tranny, then all drag cars would incorporate them.

I wish I lived in Canada so I could get A-spec to do that swap for me....Anyone know of another place that will do the swap? Maybe in the SouthEast U.S.?

I don't think all professional dragger use automatic transmissions, maybe a handful. Maybe clutchless transmissions with paddle shifters, but I do think some professionals do use the traditional manual transmission as well. Also I have seen some crazy fast automatics at Ford Fun Weekend running 6's and 7's no problem, but that different because automatic mustangs are popular.[ October 31, 2002: Message edited by: powerman_5000 ]

It is easier to make a "bullet proof" auto than a "bullet proof" standard. [img]shrug.gif"%20border="0[/img] I'm a firm believer that no human can shift faster than an automatic.
