any type of thin strong wood will do, just cover it in fabric or carpet.

I would fiberglass the origonal one, then put your design on that one. Worst come to worst, you cut yourself a wood one to another desired shape, then use that as your template for fiberglassing.

making one out of fiberglass would be a good idea, why didn't I ever think of that? Mine's starting to sag a bit and I want to do some custom stuff with it, maybe use some thinker wood, but my hatch already has issues staying open on colder days. Now I just gotta get around to learning to fiberglass.
