Turbo on 1.8

Post by seneca »

Hey Everyone,
Ok now I haven't looked back into the records but what kind of numbers can you expect to put out if you turbo a GS 1.8 engine? I'm just wondering, a friend of mine wants to turbo my car for me (works in a shop) so I can keep up with his custom turbo Probe (that thing is fast...dyno'd at justtttt about 300 whp) :D But seeing how you guys have prob tried this b4 what's your suggestions!
thx,
Tyson

Which Probe? The first genwith the 2.2L 4Cyl or did he do a custom turbo on a 2nd gen with the 2.5l v6 on the newer ones?

I say spend like $400 on a Probe GT engine and turbo that.

A properly tuned 1.8 turbocharged has power enough to give you lots of fun! If you go a little larger on turbo size and piping (although you can always modify that) you have your system capable of doing the 2.5 swap, and you would have earned good experience on delivering with a turbo engine, so you probably won´t blow the same things you may have blew on your K8 on your Kl engine!! I´ll reccomend you that!

I've got a 2.2 powered mazda mx6. I've blown 4 motors due to lean tuning. I used to have a saab .42/.48 T3 on it, and with a cracked piston and compression of 55-90-90-95 I put down 180 whp and 249 ft lbs at 10-12 psi. I'm also 5200 ft above sea level. If anyone is interested I can post the plot.
Anyways, I gave up on the mx6 and decided to make it my daily driver. My mx3 is getting a 2.5 KLDE and a .48/.60 T3. I was thinking of running nitrous too but the KLDE have pretty wimpy rods and cast pistons so I dont want to push my luck. Nevertheless, in the near future you will see a 2.5 turbo powered mx3 :D
