Dyes? where can i get some?

Post by Split Sixer »

i'm currently repainting my interior, and i am going black with red. I have painted my door panels black and i planed on dyeing the fabric red, however, i have been unable to find any red dye. Most places i go to only carry black and gray. partsource has it in their catalog but apparently thaty can't ship it into canada =/ so can someone if plz tell me where to get some. Or would it be advisable to just buy red fabric? thx

a lot of talk on the clubprotege.com went on concerning dyeing the fabrics and it usually turned out to be a bad idea... getting red fabric would be much better.. plus when you dye it red you can't control as much exactly what shade it will be... if you buy you have much more control on shading cause you can just buy the shade you like

You don't want to dye fabric to a completely different color. The only time dye is recommended is when carpet or fabric fades, and you want to dye it back to the original color. Otherwise, only use the dye on plastic parts, and even then only after using a plastic adhesion promoter.

Look for an automotive upholstery or even boat supply house to look at fabric samples, and find a guy/gal who knows how to do upholstery.

If you ever do need to get the dye for plastic and vinyl, you'll find a wide assortment at your local automotive paint supply house. Not only will they have lots of shades preloaded in spraycans, they should also be able to mix custom colors, and load them into generic spray cans for about $10 a spray can on top of the paint cost.

Using fabric dye is BAD on most fabrics, especially carpeting and thicker upholstery fabric.

The only fabric i've found that it worked well on was dying felt, like the plug for my sunroof and re-dying the inside of my cointray.

I used some on my headliner and the **** was flaking off like crazy. It didn't really dye it black either, it was a lighter color black as the tan was bleeding through.

I bought some red dye a long time ago b/c i wanted to dye my proteges carpet red when I had the ricer bug. I sprayed some of that crap onto some extra carpeting I had and it dyed it red, but if you flipped the fibers of the carpet ever so slightly, you could see the tan underneath. The crap started flaking off too after a week so I scrapped that idea.

Unless you buy a crapload of dye and physicall dip the entire carpt into the dye, soaking it and then somehow drying it out so it won't flake apart later (i don't have a clue how that would be possible) it'll turn out like pure dog****.

Just buy some fabric and reupholster the panels....its not hard and it'll probably cost less too. Fabric dye cans don't last a lot, and you have to use a lot to get good coverage.

www.mazdamaniac.com check out the interior modifications section for his MX-3. He used Sunbrella which is a water/fade resistant fabric that is often used on boats and outdoor furniture. I'm not sure if they offer a true red but you could always use high quality vinyl.
