Glass sunroof conversion (w/pics)

Post by Gro Harlem »

A few ppl were IMing me about my glass sunroof. I finally took some pics today when I had my headliner off when I was doing my manual seatbelt conversion.

And for those who are wondering, the glass roof is off of a 92 Ford Escort GT. Any 91-96 EGT's roof will fit. It doesn't just "bolt on" you have to drill new holes in your sliding sunroof bracket thing for the new roof, about 6mm outward on both sides and it will work. ALso you need to retrofit the seal so it seals completely on the sides. Other than that it fits pretty good. I've had it on for the winter with no problems with leaking.

anyways, here are the pics

Wil,

Does the sunroof have a sunshield that slides into the headliner? Like the kind that hondas have on them to block sun from getting in your face and what not.

nope that would be impossible to do seeing how you MUSt use your old assembly. the escort sunroof slides under the roof, ours goes over top the roof. Unless you fabbed some brackets and sliders for a sliding panel it wouldn't work.

I don't see why you'd want that anyways, the glass is pretty darkly tinted during the day and the car is so damn claustrophobic feeling to begin with (main reason i wanted glass). The inside if you didn't notice is mirror tinted from the factory, see how it reflects everything in that one pic.

W/the headliner installed you can actually see the screws in that pic, but I doin't have any pics of that, my cams batt is chargin.

Looks great man! How much light does it let through in the daytime?? I don't really want one that's tooo dark, cause that's what I was looking for - that open feeling of having the roof open when you can't. But you also said it helps with teh clausterphobic feeling soo..

one more sunroof question, haha.. I've always wondered why they cut the opening in the car so small compared to where the actual roof fits. I know it needs room on the sides to seal, and some for the front and back, but whyd they make the rear part of the seal area soooo much bigger than the front? I've always thought about modifying the interior/headliner/roof area, to make the roof extend farther back inside the car... only thing I can think of is maybe they did that for aerodynamic reasons or somthin?

Nice work! Tak pics with the liner in.

I imagine driving on the highway with that thing up is a dangerous idea, if it gets nailed with a rock, or would it be as strong as a windshield.

I imagine they make em pretty tough.. It may go back into the roof in its original design but it's still most likely designed to take a hit from a rock or somthing while in closed posistion..
