Ques. about rubber door trim

I'm not sure what to do. The rubber or plastic trim on the edge of my DS door is coming off and I need to get a new one because it's cracked and started to turn brittle. Should I just replace it or take the whole thing off and try to clean up the glue left over? Also if I replace it, What kind of glue should be used or what is the best thing? OH... Duh....
