KLZE Road Trip Need Advice

Post by ProjekMX3 »

I am planning on finally after two months of waiting going on what I like to call a KLZE road trip. Heres the deal. I am traveling 4 hours and 15 minutes to Ohio to buy my new mx. Once I get there I will be installing the KLZE in the garage there where the car is currently sitting. The car has 120,000 on it. It has a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch that has been broken in properly and a pacesetter exhaust. I will be running a k8 ecu, KL02 vaf, redline mt90 gear oil, and Mobil 1 5w-30 full syn. Now heres the catch I do not have access to a vehicle that I could use to tow it back to Michigan. So me and a friend will be driving there and both of us will be driving back. One of the people who is helping me with the swap has done the ZE swap 3 times before. The other person has done some swaps on other cars. I have read most of the write ups about ZE swaps so I have a good idea of what to do. Anyway I'm wondering what your opinions are on driving this car home after the swap. Also if you have any tips or things that you all noticed while doing your ze swaps. All I really want to know is "Do you think this car is capable of being driven home? and What precautions should I take to make sure there are no mishaps?" I appreciate any ideas/help you can lend me. Here are some pics of the car and the engine in case that helps. Also feel free to post the first word you said when you drove your klze mx3 for the first time.

This is what the car looks like now... I took the engine out a few weeks back.

I thought the first 500 miles was ment for new clutches that have not been broken in yet? I drove my car for a few hours after my swap with no issues, although I did have to baby it for the first 500 miles or so as my clutch was new.

You should be fine. Just keep a good eye on your fluids for the first 100 Km's or so. And dont drive it for 4 hours with codes comming up and not checking them.

As for the swap, its really easy, i had never done a motor swap before and pulled 2 engines and put in 2 engines in one weekend. I'd sway the hardest part has to be getting on and off the power steering pump. But with the people your doing the swap with and the knowledge they have from doing it before will make it a peice of cake. Well i guess in your case its just putting it back on.

My first word when i drove my KLZE'd mx was :D . I was speechless and grinning from ear to ear. Mind you 2 days later when the headgasket went i wasnt anywhere near as happy :dunno: .

Goodluck and let us know how it goes.

I'm not really sure, i havnt had time to rip it apart yet. When i did the swap i just slapped the distributer on and didnt set the timming... but i doubt wrong timing could be that catastrophic. I think the ZE was just old and tired and it was its time to go. Its ok, ive got some big plans for it over the winter.

- Mike Seli prototype cams
- CZT or Interprep stiffer valve springs
- Maybe some stronger retainers
- Flatlander rebuild kit - the pistons
- DIY port and polish along with some port matching
- MSD ignition with blaster 2 coil and maybe the GM module mod.
- 65mm Throttle body from CZT, maybe 67mm, havnt decided yet.
- AFRP and something to control A/F. I'm debating on a megasquirt Stand Alone system, that or if someone can figure out how to make the Apexi S-AFC work at full throttle, i'll just get that.

I already have headers, intake and exhaust. So i should be pushing close so 200whp fully tuned :D . I'll be shooting for low 14's next year.

Well I think the 40,000+ miles that are already on it will have it pretty much broken in. :p
