the klze motor that people import for swaps are from japan and made for there local market not exporting and there is a reason why they have all the same low km on them and they are pulled out of cars to swap in new ones or scrap the car altogehter. And if you do research you will fined lots of little proplems that people have with parts braking on the ze where you dont hear of it on the de but its the same part. Its not real hard to believe if the local market is only going to use a procuct for a short time and they would worry about making it last much long then that given time. Know the export market has longer standers for period of use so they put more inspection and quilty in those parts. Plus i stated they was the same parts so they are equal if anything the ze would have a more of a chance of having a minor difectied part that in the long run make it weeker. But hey there is always lemons in everything.

Your view is not borne out by local experience.

The used JDM cars imported into this country are as durable as those sold new, and fetch close to the same prices. If it were not so, they would be unpopular, would not sell, and would not be brought in.

The failures you mention in KLZEs could be due to the more extreme performance demanded by their owners.

Exactly, we get our engines imported and swapped for a performance increase, ie:racing. Our ZE's (especially those pulled from Millenias) would have been more likely daily drivers and rarely driven hard...but us speed freaks got the engines to go faster, i know my ZE hit the redline atleast once daily :driver: <img src="http://www.catscratch.org/scoop/images/ ... urnout.gif" alt=" - " />

So your saying probes dont race and anyone with a stock motor dosnt redline. I bounce my car of the rev limiter all the time and that well past the red line. The probe was used for racing long before the first ze ever showed up over here and most of the performance parts where built on the de. Plus all the people i have met in person or on the net, probe/mazda i have noticed that people that put ze in is there biggest mod some might put nos and the smaller mods. Where the people that mod the de on average put 230-300hp to the wheels(not saying there is no ze there but there is way more de at that mark) so what one is pushed harder. I have yet to hear of a valve droping or retainer clip braking on a de, but is very commin on a ze. And dont say its the cams because there not that much more lift in the ze plus people have been putting them im de for along time. The kfze dosnt have that problem and it has even beter cams plus probes have also been using racing cams and still dont have that problem. Vaughn determaned that theres a ber thats not remore that over time wears throw and splits the retainer and this problem is only on the ze. Now im sure if the motor needed to have a longer life they would take the time to remove this problem.

So pretty much KLDE engines are more reliable? Now I am thinking of not getting one...

Never mind the fact that, DE or ZE, anyone who's pushing serious boost would be wise to swap out the pistons and rods for stronger forged units anyway, making the top end (heads, cams, IM, etc.) the only real difference between the two motors.

That being said, the longer duration/greater overlap on the ZE cams may not necessarily be ideal for a forced-induction motor, even though they are great for NA applications. Very often milder cams are a better option with boost, because the decreased overlap prevents mixture from being blown out the exhaust valves.

The increased flow of the ZE intake would definitely be a benefit to a boosted motor, however.

As to the JDM vs. North American market build-quality/reliability debate - well, I choose not to comment, other than to state that with what you have to pay to own a vehicle in Japan, chances are pretty slim that the Japanese consumers would put up with receiving lesser build quality than export products.

The most likely reason why we get all of these "low-mileage" ZE motors is that either the importers just plain don't know what the actual mileage is, so they make it up, or they are lying (heaven forbid!) because there's no way for us to verify the mileage on the vehicle the motor came from.

In general, however, and in defense of the importers, it should also be noted that Japanese drivers drive far fewer miles per year on average than North American drivers. Why? Excellent public transit, the insane cost of parking, and the fact that the ENTIRE COUNTRY is about the size of California, so really, how far can you drive?

Two more things to bear in mind: apparently, repair costs in Japan are extremely high, to the point that cars involved in relatively minor accidents are more frequently insurance write-offs due to the cost of the required repairs. On top of this, there is an annual vehicle inspection required, and apparently the fee for this inspection is higher the older the car is, with a significant step up for cars that are more than five or six years old.

Is there any tranny that mounts on our engines that makes RWD possible?

wouldnt the entire mounting of the engine make this impossible?

Sorry, but the engine is not going to be mounted in a MX-3. A guy wants to buy my old K8 engine, and he wonders if it will be possible to mount a RWD tranny on it.

the reasons we get so many low milage engines from japan has nothing to do with difference in the quality of them. They have extremely strict laws concerning vehicals and engines conditions. I don't have all the info right in front of me that i researched in the past but basically every few years japanese have to take their cars in for special inspections these inspections are extremely expensive to begin with and every little thing wrong taks on big money so it becomes cheaper to simply buy new vehicles. so they end up with lots of used cars in the junk yards and so they sell the jdm parts over here cause we love it.

if you were to take a familia/323/protege AWD unibody and put a MX3 body onto it, you'd have an AWD mx3.

I'm sure lots of welding would be necessary to do this.

IF you wanted RWD, just pop out the front axles & plug the diff....then you'll have a RWD mx3.

Since the awd BG chassis cars use the b-series engines. you might have to stick with a bpt. Getting a KL to work with the awd tranny is the problem...plus there is less room under the hood that might not allow fitment of the v6

gro... are you saying that making the mx3 rwd isn't as hard as making it awd?

If the motor/tranny is going to be used in some kind of custom RWD hybrid rather than an MX-3, your friend may want to investigate the possibility of swapping in the K-series motor and tranny together, and making his vehicle rear-mid-engined. It would take a HUGE amount of fabrication and creativity to make a shift linkage that would work well, plus an engine compartment that is sealed effectively enough to contain the fumes, etc. but it can be done.

For example, a long time ago, a company called SHOgun or something like that used to build rear-mid-engined Ford Festiva's with the Yamaha-built Taurus SHO V6 motor and transmission. Likewise, the US-spec Lotus Elise (WICKED car, by the way) uses the motor/tranny combo from a Toyota Celica GT-S in a rear-mid-mounted configuration. I also personally know of a guy who took the 20V 5-cylinder motor and tranny from an Audi and mounted it in the rear of a VW Scirocco - it wasn't pretty, but hey, to each his own, I guess...
