k8 auto tranny compatibility

Post by byrongo »

I've tried to search this out so I don't waste anyone's time, but I haven't been able to find anything definitive, so bear with me, and please put my mind to rest once and for all.

I have a 94 GS with an auto transmission that no longer transmits. Rather than rebuilding it or paying to have it rebuilt (already been rebuilt once) I wanted to get a new tranny for it. I don't quite have the funds to do a whole engine swap for a KLZE like I would like, but I was wondering if the KLZE tranny will fit onto the K8 engine.

The reason I ask is that it's much easier to find a cheap KLZE or KL tranny than it is to find a K8 tranny, unless there's someplace I haven't yet looked. But I've found KLZE trannies for 425 shipped, but I talked with Jap Imports and they said that the KLZE auto tranny will NOT work with a K8 engine.

Anyone have any experience with this? Last thing I need is to buy the wrong part, but I need to get my car running before the rainy season starts.

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
(and I've seen talk about swapping manual trannys between engines...same deal for auto trannys?)

I don't think it's the case of not working with the K8 engine, so much as not working with the K8 AT Control Unit and ECU. If the KL MTX bolts onto a K8, why wouldn't the ATX? But the KL uses a different AT Control Unit to the MX-3, which has more connections to the ECU. So you would need to run extra wires and use a KL ECU, which really means fitting a KL engine as well.

Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)

it does work with the k8 motor but does not fit into the mx3, both mounts would have to be custom made, wiring harness is different plus you need the kl32 atx control unit. i tried, failed and am now in the process of getting manual tranny parts for the swap. it is possible but would cost too much and take too long. imo.
