Re: rear disc conversion??
You should be able to get the parts for or off of a GS. I don't know what all you'll need, but they should bolt right on.

Re: rear disc conversion??
i am doing that same conversion. i have the calipers, rotors and bearings. im not sure if i need the GS spindels or not yet. i have paintedmy rear calipers as well. here are some pics of my calipers

this is right after i clear coated the calipers....

this is the compleet assembly minus the spindles and bearings.

Re: rear disc conversion??
thanx :~) i am thinking i need the spindles from the mx-3 GS as well. i just had access to the pieces pictured, the bearings (from a mx-3 GS as well) so i picked them up. if you were to get the entire rear spindle section from the GS version that would bolt right up to your struts.

Re: rear disc conversion??
you would definitely need the spindles since you need the bearing and the drilled out holes to hold the caliper in place.
I'm not sure if the stock trailing arms from the RS would match up with the GS spindle..i don't see why they would be different but it is possible.
Based on my experience with other mazdas, this is all you would need:
1: GS spindles w/bearings (make sure the bearings are in good shape, they are about $110 from mazda EACH to replace (i found out the hard way), and you need a press to get them installed.
2: New rotors (don't be a cheapass and get used ones now!!)
3: GS calipers (used or rebuilt...i'd go for rebuilt ones..they only cost about $40 each).
4: GS brakelines (or just upgrade to some SS lines)
If you can get all the bolts loose, then consider yourself lucky! THose trailing arm bolts tend to freeze completely up. Before you even start buying parts, you might want to jack your rear up and see if you can loosen all of the bolts before you waste your money getting some GS disc brakes.

Re: rear disc conversion??
from vaughns site........u know its alway good to go through the memebers sites
Rear Disc Brakes:
It would be possible to swap to the disc brake from a GS in place of the drums on RS. You will need the complete rear spindle assembly, wheel bearing assembly, rear calipers, rotors, flexible brake lines and park brake cable. In addition you will also need the bigger bore master brake cylinder and front because four wheel disc brakes requires more fluid pressure and volume to operate rear calipers than it does to operate drum brakes. Unless you are racing on a tight circuit course where you are on the brakes often there is little advantage to swapping to discs. The disc brake assembly add a lot of additional unsprung weight and do require much more maintenance as the park brake actuator level has a tendency to stick in the engaged position.

Re: rear disc conversion??
I was actually thinking about doing the same thing, for the only reason of the way it looks wit rims. Drums look horrible with rims, and if you don't have anything else performance wise to spend your money on, then get them. I know I am going to be switching once I get rims.

i have been tossing around the idea for the sheer stopping power.. its helpfull at the speeds i tend to travel at.. i am addicted to speeding.. open highways.. drool

Re: rear disc conversion??
You definitely need a bigger bore master brake cylinder from a GS. I tried without it I had no brake power whats so ever. You also need a e-brake cable from a GS. I recommend just getting a new one from the dealer but a used one is fine. Also get steel brake lines while your in there.
later,
