Performance fault

Amy has a lovely motor, it is a mazda MX3 with the V6 and the GS. Problem it that it lack any kind of performance. It will not wheel spin in fresh rain or on loose gravel. If you floor the accel, it will go upto 6000 rpm but it takes for ever to get there. I can out run her in my 87 2.4 liter forklift engined toyota pickup. <p>We have had many mechanics look at it and the dealer. All the mechanics said that it was the air flow or air temp units. even the diagnostics pointed to this. <p>The dealer Bommarito in St Louis said that it is the Transmission that is at fault. But we had two other transmission places look at it and they say the transmission is fine and that it was these sensors. The last diagnostic pointed to the Air Flow sensor and so Amy's dad replaced it at $200 from the dealer and it had no effect!<p>Help, Amy recently quit her job at the Suburban Journal in South County cause they are condescending to thier employees. So all of this is upsetting her. Please can you advise as to the cure for her car. It really is a nice car and she needs to be able to drive fast to get some of her stress out.<p>many thanks.

friend of mine has a 626 had similar problems (well the spinning out part) and it was the clutch but his is an auto sounds like to me its a tranny problem though amy should go to Mazda and have them run a diagonostic on the car

I don't believe that's the answer. The gearbox drives the car in forward and reverse. The car takes probably 40 seconds to geto 60 mph. It has been diaganosed by two transmission specialists and they said it wasn't the tranny. The dealer said it was the tranny and pointed out that it had burnt oil... Well I have to exahust all posibilities before she has to get it rebuilt and reinstalled for $2600. A new mechanic at the dealer said that maybe the timing belt has gone out of sync. Is this one of the motors that destoys itself??? Or not.<p>I have checked to see if the cat is blocked and it is not. I haven't changed the fuel filter as I can't find it. Im not going to buy a manual for this car cause all the ones available are ****.<p>I know that the haynes manuals are excellent but I can't find one that they do for this car. Could anyone advise if this engine and all systems hooked to it are exactly the same as the 636 or the probe gt?<p>Cheers!

When the cluch plate wears out in a manual gear box, the engine will rev up but because there is only a slim piece of material left in the cluch plate, there isn't enough friction to make the wheels increase in speed also.<p>An automatic relys on fluid that is traped in two bowls with fins instead of a plate...<p>The engine in amys motor increases in revs and the car has a proportional increase in speed, so i believe the gearbox is doing its job. <p>It seems that the engine has no power. So maybe it could be the timing. I don't know, but I doubt it is the timing cause it wouldn't run as smoothly as it does.<p>Anyways, thanks for the help.

Ever do a compression check for the hell of it?

check the cv joints the transmission clutch and the timing belt all these could cause that

if its an automatic, just quit trying, they have no performace. Iknow I have a manual and an auto. GS autos have sloppy performance as well. All cause its an auto.

And no, the V6 engine is NOT one of the motors that destroys itself. The engine in my car have 216.000 Km on it and it's still working like a dream.

I think in reference to the timing belt.
The V6 as far as I know will not destroy itself if the timing belt breaks.<p>Just FYI, Haynes doesn't make a manual for mx-3, but Chilton's does. There's also a shop manual on this website.
I suggest you check out page B2-004. They list all the possible causes, from insufficient compression to dragging brakes, even wrong tire size!
