nothing you have heard of before, trust me!

Post by 86Maz6 »

OK well i own a 1986 2dr 626 with the 2.0L FE. The problem i have is that my car is slow(big surprise there) NE ways i am looking into doing an engine swap. The engine I have chosen is the one you are all geting rid of the 1.8L V6. I know that the KLZE will work in both 626, and mx-3 but will the 1.8L v6 work in a 626? I know i will need pretty much the entier front end of a mx-3 GS. U may ask why would i go with a smaller engine well it is simple my car has 97hp and there are no performance parts out there for it, the 1.8L v6 on the other hand has 130hp(more then the GT version of my car) and there are parts out there if u look in the right place.<p>SO will it work, and isnt the 1.8L v6 called a f8, or is that a different engine?

well, You cant use your tranny thats for sure.
With money, you can do anything. Motormounts may have to be custom unless your car came wuth a K series motor in the same year/model. You'll deefd wiring harness, ECU. Exhaust will have to be custom as well. Lots of money man.. lots of money.

well I was looking to spend around $3500 which for a motor swap i dont consider to be that much, like steeb said it would probible cost the same as a KL swap but I dont think it would fit as the K8 is just taller then my engine is, but with a custom hood(one like a eclipse but over the middle of the hood) it should fit nicely. And as far as i know there where no mazda v6s in the 80's but there is a KF engine but I dont know if it has ne link to mine.

You should research the 16V DOHC version of your motor; the FE3. <p>http://plaza.ufl.edu/mugen23/FE.htm<p>http://members.aol.com/solomiata/FE3.html

Dude for $3500 you could be a good used MX-3 and then fix that up a bit. I bet you would be much more happy and it would be a ton less work.

Yeah, spend the $3500, when you're done you'll still have a car that's worth less than $1000. Don't want to be mean, but economically it doesn't make sense. No one will pay any more than that for an '86 anything. Even if it's perfect or hot rodded. Kiss the baby goodbye and get on with an MX project. Anyone who advises otherwise is probably after your money. You can get into this game pretty cheap. For $3500 you will also be 5-6 years newer, so parts will be a lot easier to find. A buddy of mine still has the 72 Ford van he bought in 82. He spent so much fixing the piece of $#it he said he can't afford to get rid of it. It currently houses his kids bikes in the winter. Ask yourself, do I want a car or a shed in 5 years.
...does not play well with others.

well the main reason i own this car is b/c not many poeploe do, it is quiet rare, also this is my first car so i would like to keep is as long as i possible as i can even though i have thought of selling it many times. besides there is nothing like the look on a guys face that you just beat with a $1000 car. Also if you think about it there is no reason this is not a good project car 1st it weighs only 100lbs more that a MX-3, 2nd it has the same chasse as a 88-92 MX-6(thuse ne engine swap that can be done to one of those can be done to my car), and 3rd it has an old school look that makes it a sleeper.

I'm pretty sure there was a turbo version of that engine, there was certainly a turbo MX-6 of that vintage, that would be the easiest route, I like your individuality, but a 626?

I just gotta ask why everyone on this board hates the k8 so much? Its a very fast engine, reving easily to 7500rpm. If guys can take nissans CA18DET, and tune it to crank out well over 600hp, i don't see any reason why it can't be done with the k8. In fact, i bet it'd be faster than the 2.5 that all you guys are swapping for. $3000 for an engine swap, or $3000 to tune the k8? I woulda tuned out the k8. Just a thought.

Ok, you dump 3k into your K8, and I'll dump another 1800 in my KLZE and we'll see who's faster at the end of the day. Dollar for dollar, a KLZE is going to own a K8, period.
