v-6 160,000 miles how reliable?

Post by chrism »

I was just wondering how long these engines are usually good for. I amm looking into buying another 1.8 with 60,000 less miles. does this seem worth it?

if you are going to buy another engine get a klde or klze, depending on how much you are spending you should be able to get a klde for like $800 from a junkyard around ya, just a thought

My green GS had 135,000 and was running strong, but since it was an automatic i sold it. Now i have a white 92 with 195,000 and oddly it has more power than the 93.
I think its a matter of how the engine was treated by the previous owner
Hector

For reliabilty, it depends on how it was fixed and by who. My engine has 338,000km and it runs like new.

...and then you have me. I have 130,000km on mine and here are the problems i have!
1) CamShaft Friction Gear (Fixed - $1100can).
Problem: This caused a VERY annoying ticking sound.
2) Timeing Belt and accessory belts (Fixed - $850can).
Problem: Not really a problem, just something that needed to be attended too.
3) Head Gasket (Not fixed).
Problem: When i pull out my front left spark plug wire there is about 2mm of oil on the bottom of it. I don't notice any decrease in performance, but there should not be oil in there!
NOTE: When i had synthetic in the engine it burned a bit of oil. 700km ago i had the synthetic drained out and put some Castrol GTX 10w30 oil in with some lucas oil treatment s--- and it no longer burns oil. However, there is still that 2mm or so of oil that sits in the front left spark plug well.
4) Car overheated today (Fixed $118).
Problem: Turns out thermostat was sticking...
[ August 27, 2002: Message edited by: zytariuk ]

#3 would be your valve cover gasket not a head gasket. And yes the front is easy to fix, its the back one that sucks. I had mine fixed once already under my extended warranty
but there starting to puddle again. Oh well I'll use this as an excuse to put the phenolic spacers on when I have the intake off.
Good luck with #4.
Andy P. 93 GS

#3 still involves a good 2-3 hours of labor though.
As for #4 Turns out that the thermostat was sticking. Had them do a rad flush and change the thermostat. All is good now :].
