What could cause bad alternator symptoms?

Post by marksoden »

Just trying to tap the wealth of MX3 minds here as to what could possibly be causing mechanics to test my alternator and say it's charging ok, but then after prolonged testing, see that periodically it is NOT charging. Two alternators later, the car continues to drive with periodic lags in the charging system. I really believe the alternators have been fine...(and the car is back in the shop again)

First check all wiring, next see if the voltage regulator is good to go. You can have this done at any Autozone or Advance.

I guess I'll also answer my own question. According to the latest from the shop after taking it back a day after receiving it and seeing the light again...the Wire Harness Terminal was rotted out and it would cost around $800 with parts and labour to replace. Mechanic says it is giving false error codes and if I don't mind the light it isn't hurting the car. Yah right.
