If you are going to do it you self just get the axle rebuilt. Alot easier, quick and alot less headakes. And also cleaner.

Speedy Muffler replaced both fronts on mine for $300. But what can you do. They are con artists.

Down here in the "Dirty South" I got mine done for $200-225. I'll have to look it up in my records. But its cheap down here.

Do NOT go to Mazda. I bought them and there were the wrong amount of splines on them...by like 2 splines. It took us about 3 hours to figure out why they wern't fitting. DAMN MAZDA!

Are you mechanically inclined? Can you do your own brakes? They're easy to do. You can pick up a half shaft (drive shaft, 2 CV joints, one assembly) for $77 from NAPA. Then you just pull the wheel, rent a spring compressor and spindle nut socket from Autozone, compress the spring, remove the two top bolts attaching the spindle to the strut, remove the spindle nut, and pull the whole assembly away from the car. The wheel side of the axle will fall in your lap. Now just give the axle a couple of good jerks and the other end will come free. Now revers instructions for replacement. I did both of mine in less than an hour... but I been turning wrenches and bustin knucles for over 20 years. Might take you two hours. Worth the time instead of the money, in my opinion.

There is no need to compress the springs or touch anything to do with the springs.

I just replaced both my axles.. the clicking was from that, not my CV's.
if you have it done.. have them replace the axles not the cv's
Turns out it costs more to replace the cv's instead of the entire axle.
I spent $484.69 replacing both my axles, A 4-wheel alignment, and a Camber kit.
