Why would this happen..or is it normal?

Post by MX-3 Lover »

Whenever I sit at a stop light and the motor has been running for a bit, I can stick it in 1st gear and the rpms jump from a little under 1000 to about 1250 and stay there. When I return it back to neutral it drops back down to just under 1000rpm's. It's a GS and 5spd. Does this happen to you guys or is it just wear and tear on the engine over the years?
I'm interested because I'll probably buy this car (my boss is letting me sort out whatever is wrong with it first) and I just want to make sure there'll be no huge problems in the future.

Mine go up to about 1200 when the clutch is engaged and it is in gear. When I take it out of gear and let off the clutch, the rpm's drop to about 600.
Steve

If you watch your tach you will almost always notice that the rpms change when you put it in gear. If you dont notice the change is probably so small it doesnt register on it.

Mine must change very little cause the RPM's don't move at all.
