Telling KL-ZE apart from KL-03

Post by dorin »

If I were to buy a KL-ZE how do I know I got a real KL-ZE and not a KL-03?
Are there any markings or outside signs or are the differences between the two engines only internal?
------------------
dorin@canada.com

From what I gathered the compression ratio is higher on the KL-ZE than the KL-03. I think this means the pistons are different.
Come on you veteran MX-3ers, any hints as to how one can tell a KL-ZE apart from a KL-03 without riping the engines apart?
------------------
dorin@canada.com

Yeah, it's tough for most people to tell the difference.
The only real way that I know of to tell the difference (on the surface) is to look at the cylinder head serial numbers. On a regular KL engine, it will read KL1A1 or KL4 or KL4G or some variation on these numbers.
KLZE will say KL31 (and will be proceeded by 1A1). Only ZE's use the KL31 designation. This number can be found on the rear of the head, just under the valve cover. Be sure that whoever you buy it from reads you these numbers, and don't clue them into what it should be! Most engine importers don't know the difference, but once they find out what numbers you're looking for, they may try to mislead you.
Hope this helps with your search!

quote:
Originally posted by dorin:
From what I gathered the compression ratio is higher on the KL-ZE than the KL-03. Hey Dorin, look here
http://www.naplenews.com/staff/fortier/ ... me.html
Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "KLZE" he shows a o3 and ze side by side. the ports on the intake are larger than the 03.
[This message has been edited by Bbqman218 (edited August 15, 2001).]
[This message has been edited by Bbqman218 (edited August 15, 2001).]

Crap , the site isnt working. I went on aol and did a search , KLZE I did it in all caps. the first one that came up,(Bay Area Probe Owners Club) was the one I picked. Then I clicked on Mikes Probe GT. You may try going to www.aol.com first then type in KLZE if you dont have aol. Chris
I double checked the address and what is written above is what it says on the address. I dont know what I did wrong.
[This message has been edited by Bbqman218 (edited August 15, 2001).]

Thanks for the help. If anyone else needs the info, it is possible to tell the KL-ZE apart from the KL-03 from the outside, mainly by the intake manifold. The Superprobe page at http://www.naplesnews.com/staff/fortier ... me.html has a few pointers on how the intake of the KL-ZE is different. There is also a side-by-side picture of the KL-ZE and KL-03 at http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/5335/klze.htm.

The post by Hank about looking for the cylinder head serial numbers at the rear of the head under the valve cover came close to driving me batty (a short trip for those who know me!)!
I could not find ANY cylinder head numbers at the rear (opposite end of cam drive) of the radiator side head (one with distributor), either external or internal. However, I did notice "KL 31 431" stamped into the intake CAMSHAFT. Are these the numbers you're referring to, Hank?

Found it! Numbers are found underneath valve cover flange about midway down the head on the INTAKE side, "KL31-1A1".
