Yes, there some bad things in my head when I think to the VRIS plates.

Acid will overbore and the plate will not sit air tight anymore ...

Yeah, it's totally true. You have to check the cam-lifter clearance, and adjust lash with shims designed for. Here's a KLG4 (1998-2002 626 V6) Cam. Make sure you get the piston re-entered (fully) by turning it clockwise until it stops when you are putting on some new brake pads.
