check the cap if not that then its probably a timing belt issue i had a problem like that with a friends corola timing belt was cracked and sliped under a load.

check your plugs first make sure they are all gapped properly and are not fouled if those are ok make sure the distributer cap isnt cracked and the contacts arent worn if both of those are ok then i would check the timing since its such a pita save that for last. also is it blowing any smoke?
