It would have to be rust-free so I could have a shop weld it back together.

And the solution was: The intake tube from between the air filter box and the manifold had a tear in it. Obviously the MAF was measuring the air, but the vacuum leak was causing problems. In addition, I bent the arm back under the console and manually engaged it. Now it starts, idles, and runs fine....
