Could be your shifter linkage is badly worn/rusted or broken and that makes it very hard to shift properly without grinding.

They are sealed bearings, so you don't add grease.

They just add a metal piece to deflect road salt from getting into the springs and rotting them prematurely.

This has happened to me several times. It was just a loose battery terminal (neg). I carry a wrench with me now. It keeps coming loose.

my car has been super reliable, has never let me down,stranded or anything since I boought her at 325,000km. I have not spent anything on the engine in two years except a radiator cap and power steering belt.
