How should the VAF be oriented?
Read this on wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_flow_sensor ): The vane meter approach has some drawbacks: * it restricts airflow which limits engine output * its moving electrical or mechanical contacts can wear * finding a suitable mounting location within a confined engine compartment ...

Re: 1993 Mx3 KLZE buildup for 24 hours of lemons
20100330: Checked the wiring on the little black box that was spliced into one of the ECU connectors. Turns out it's a resistor and it's on one of the water thermosensors. Spliced the resistor onto the VAF wire and the car idles much better now. Still need to order a probinator chip to see how that ...

Re: Mx3 with KLZE swap running rich, afterburn
I got a chance to take a closer look at where the resistor is wired in. Turns out it's on the pink/black wire, which afaict is a water thermosensor. Hmm. That doesn't sound right. I'm not entirely sure where it's supposed to be wired in, but the VAF makes sense, and that's the red wire. Spliced it i...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
I always fill with distilled water and ethylene glycol. The fluid in the reservoir was cleaner than I've seen in other cars but still had a lot of particles in it. When we did the water pump we cleaned out every pathway we could get to, but I'm sure there's lots more nasty gunk we can't see. So a fl...

Re: fowljesse's GS/SE DE/ZE ;)
Did you remove your smog pump? If not, what's to prevent you from pumping EXTRA air into the exhaust? (I don't know much about emissions, especially since I live in a state without emissions checks, but I always thought the manufacturers' claim that the pumps are designed to assist the catalytic con...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
The brakes are considered safety equipment, so they don't count toward the $500 budget. I'm not sure whether "brakes" includes "brake lines" or just "pads and rotors", but we definitely plan on making sure our brakes are working at 110%. Brakes and cooling are the two b...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
You just replace your shifter linkage bushings with Bronzoil ones. I'm stoked that you're doing that race in an MX-3! I would recommend changing your valvetrain out for KLDE, which is more reliable. I'm excited too! I've never done anything like this before, but a few people on the team have. I gue...

Re: Is there an mx3 wiki?
Yeah I read on the FAQ about all the chaos with the mazda K engine info on wikipedia. Seems some well-intentioned but misguided people keep changing it, and any open wiki has all the same disadvantages. The problem I've run into though is that when a thread becomes useful, it gets a sticky. Then I r...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
standard tune up items are good HEI mod + external coil - replaces the common fail point stock internal coils Read a bit about this and the link I found suggested taking one off a chevette. Are there any other cars that might have an appropriate HEI system? I don't think the local junkyard keeps ca...

Re: Mx3 with KLZE swap running rich, afterburn
The only chip that I'm aware of on ebay is the crap that's supposed to increase HP and fuel mileage. It's a lie. That chip is actually a resistor that alters the signal from the VAF and IAT to get the ECU to alter fuel delivery. Unless you have a link to something that I'm not aware of. Finally got...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
I race mine a couple times a year and it has been fine for 10 years now. I would suggest changing gears before rev limit and your valves might or might not make it. Some have had issues, but you never know how the car was driven really before the failure. That's easier said than done. Revving the e...

Re: Reliability mods for KLZE
the internal coil in the distributor is a fairly common one to fail which can be remedied with the hei mod. Mine works fine but I have heard of lots of people who have encoutered this. I am not quite sure why you would need a bigger rad unless you are talking drag racing, the rad in the car is quit...
