so is it better to use fiberglass or weld in a metal plate?

you can just use sheet metal and weld some sections in, or cut them out of a scrap car at a junk yard if there good.

you can pull out the fuel rails and hook them up up not attached to the intake manifold and watch the way they are spraying, you could have just a bad injector face seal or oring.

any engine is possible if you have the time and money! but that idea doesnt sound to logical and very easy.

check your atx fluid, if it is a dirty brown and smells burnt its most likly your clutch bands in your trans are burnt out. another auto trans in the history books.

the bolt fell out while you were driving, that would suck if it was the actual shift linkage bolt and not the support bar like you had

the g series trans have different gearing i believe, i know for a fact the the mx6 trans uses a lower gear ration in 5th, so your revving lower at the same speed than the mx3 one

check the shift linkage, did it just happen overnight or when you were driving, more information would beter help diagnose the problem
