Re-covering with fabric, or vinyl isn't that hard, especially on our door panels. The shop you went to is full of it...or inexperienced, or both...

Post some pics of the rust damage so we can see how bad it is...because a price estimate doesnt really mean much....well, not to us anyway.
If it's really bad, I'd buy a new MX3, and keep the current one for either parts, or experimenting with...preferably experimenting

If you're going directly from the battery, on the driverside firewall, under the hood, there is a black rubber grommett, approximately 2 inches round...just pry that out with a flat tip screwdriver, drill a hole in it, or cut an X in it, run your wire through it, and re-insert the grommet back into ...
