Re: Alternator, waterpump belt keeps breaking...

I had the same problem, 3 broken alternator belts in about 6 months. While I know it's not recommended, I just jammed a crowbar between the alternator and the block, pulled the alternator back as tight as I could get it and tightened up the bolt. I know it must be hard on the bearing in the alternat...

Re: Dirty oil

Thanks for the input. I will as you suggest try an engine flush. I've just recently put a new pcv valve on. I'm hoping the problem is just some gunked up dirty valves and not bad rings. The car seems to run well otherwise, however in a recent emissions test I barely passed with 620 ppm. The pass for...

Dirty oil

Despite regular oil changes, every 3,000 km, my oil looks like tar. Much dirtier than it should be. I'm thinking I must have a valve problem or perhaps rings. All the carbon in my oil is indicative of poor combustion isn't it? I'm thinking of perhaps trying an engine flush to try and remove some of ...

Dirty oil

I change my oil every 3,000 kms, but find it to be dark black at every change. I'm assuming the black oil is a result of poor combustion resulting in an excess of carbon. Any suggestions on how to remedy this, plugs and wires maybe?

Re: trunk key

I had trouble opening my hatch with the key too. I found it was only the latch hook that hangs down and catchs on the bar in the lock assembly. I gave the latch hook a little tug with a pair of vice grips and now it hooks onto the bar and I can use the key to open it. The weight of the hatch can cau...

Re: help w/ hatchback lock

Over time the weight and large dimension of the hatch can cause it to move out of alignment. It dosen't take much as the "tongue or hook" has very little "target" to grasp the lock mechanism. Crouch down to lock level and slowly close the hatch. Watch to see if the "tongue o...

Re: help w/ hatchback lock

I had the same problem for the first few months I owned the car, could only access the hatch by using the release lever, the key wouldn't work. I was thinking it was like a G.M. car and I needed a separate "trunk" key. I found the "tongue" wasn't lining up with the latch. A littl...

Re: a/c question

There is a new freon substitue, "Duracool", it's supposed to be up to 30% colder than R12 or 134a. It's not all that easy to find though, but if you call a/c repair places you may find one that has it. I've seen quotes of $125.00 to evacuate and refill with this stuff, (in a properly opera...

Re: a/c question

The 1.6 engine's a/c system only uses 1.7 lbs of 134a freon, $137 for freon is grossly over priced.

Re: Belt Squeeling - Nightmare. (PLZ HELP)

Had a similar problem, going through alt belts. Problem was the pulley was out of alignment, the alt was a rebuild and the shaft was improperly shimmed on the inside of the alt casing. Solution was to grind off the back of the pulley to get it to line up. Check and make sure your pulleys are all in ...
