The RX-8 motor is a much better design and since it is not boosted you should be just fine. Mazda has a 100k warranty on the motors themselves and they would not do that if the apex seals still wore out every 60k

+1 on Wags suggestion, but it could also be fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator related and that is much harder to diagnose. I dunno bout the oil comments on the K series motors. My old K8 would run 2-3 quarts low for weeks and was still fine when I took it out. I always use/d Mobile1 Synth in it and think that helped a lot.
