Mazda 6 Big Brake 282mm

Post by Jforce »

I was going with the subaru twinpot, but now i'm still looking for something better.

So someone at the dutch forum mentioned that a MG TF 160 brakes a lot better than an mx-3.

Now that got me looking at that brake setup.

The calipers are 4 Piston, 304mm disc's and 4x100 bolt pattern.

Here's the caliper, look easy enough to make a bracket for.

The only thing is, the hub. The mx-3 hub is 55mm the MG's 57,9. Which would ask for a spigot of less than 1,5mm thick. Would the spigot survive the heat or would it crack?

Wouldn't the D in the picture be a problem ? It's much higher?

No I wouldn't think so, it's lower.

D of mx-3 is 45mm, D of MG is 38,5mm

the bottom one is MG.

So that means the disc itself would be further away from the Hub and closer to the rim.

Could pose a problem, but i can't find any dimensions of the Caliper, sadly. But than again the difference is only arround 7mm.

Was able to find them for 150 British pounds, so 250 USD.

Will be easier to find for us Europeans i think.

I've decided that I will try this.

Might take a while to get all the stuff and $ needed for it.

This mod consist off:

-Mazda 323F/Astina/Lantis spindles
-Some MG TF 282 mm discs (there are many other options btw, just changes offset, so might need other washer)
-Mazda 6 Calipers (all apply except, the 1.8 calipers)
-centric ring (decide for yourself if you need them, I think it's alot safer this way)

Pro's off this mod:

Mazda 6 calipers are cheap
Cheap replacement parts (pads/rotors/seals/rubbers)
Good available parts
Decently fat rotors: 25mm (good for heat, more mass)
Super easy installment, only 4mm washer is need. Bolts right up.
Fits 16" wheel (mine are 17") might fit some 15" not sure.

Cons:

Needs rare spindle
Its still "only" 282mm
Needs hub center ring machined

Here are some more pics:

Rears have been modded to mx-5 276mm, like wytbishop (he also inpired me to start with the fronts, so thanks man) also did:
