Depends on what area of the world you're from.
The 4cyl DOHC engines used were called the B6D
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine#B6D
They were only used in a handful of cars.

Mid-shaft? Are you talking about the crankshaft? If that failed, there is most likely larger problems with the engine and a swap might be in order. Search the worklogs and the FAQ, they would have information on what is needed.

Thanks for the answer but i was refering to the intermidate shaft that is bolted to the back of the block to make the driver side axle the same length as the passenger..

Ah, then this should have been a transmission question.

Do you have the G or F series transmission, auto or manual?

As far as I know the G series tranny had the halfshaft on them, and of course you'd need the B series bolts to line up.
I've torn down a Ford Escort GT (91-96) and a Mercury Tracer LTS (91-96) which both had G series transmissions and the halfshaft. They were mated to the BP 1.8 DOHC engine, but the shaft should line up. Take your broken shaft to the junkyard and compare it to the shaft on these cars.
Oh and check the Mazda protege LX ...

Escort GTs have both F and G series and some of the F series do have the half shaft!!! I have learned this from personal experience!! Be really careful which one you get they look exactly the same but the G series is about 3/8'' longer!!

You may be interested to know that the bearing in the midshaft is a serviceable part, so unless you ruined splines, there may be no need to source an entirely new shaft.
