Power Steering cooling pipe

Post by Dragonwight »

Like most MX-3`s the return cooling pipe for the power steering on my MX-3 has had its day. No way am i paying what they are asking for an OEM replacement part. So i took it to my local garage who are quite handy with pipe making etc and they said they would simply cut the pipe off and stick a rubber hose on.

Apparently they have done this on a few MX-3`s with no ill effect. Has anyone else done this and found it was ok? I could get length of copper pipe and do it myself but dont have the means to create the ends of the pipe.

I spoke with a knowledgeable service manager at Mazda about this and he advised against it. If there's a wreckers near you lots of cars have very similar pipes Hyundai being one of them. Grab a similar pipe and bend it to fit. There is no need for any special end just slide the rubber hose on and clamp it like Jed.

When I put a new rad in my other MX3 it had provisions for an automatic trans so I was going to connect my PS to it.

You are Wag :)

On the AWD RS I have used a ford probe oil cooler for the PS cooler. works just fine. I was planning on using an ATX rad and use the cooler in it for the PS.

I was wondering about using an RS cooler vs the GS cooler anyways as the RS cooler is so much smaller. I do not think that there would be any ill effects.
