atx engine in a mtx

Post by Sleeper6 »

Okay so the other day my very tired k8 decided it was going to start running rough. Noticable missfire condition, drove it home then to work next day (aprox 20miles) when the cel came on for about 3 sec. So got to work and pulled the codes with one of the techs for a code17. Pulled the wires one by one till I narrowed it to the front center #4 cyl upon no change when the wire was removed. Turned the car off, switched wires and restarted with no change. Removed the plugs and swapped them ( no visible plug damage btw) and restarted with no change. Officially decided my #4 cyl is shot, and was planning on pulling it in at the end of the day to do my compression check to put the nail in the coffin and after sitting for aprox 3 hrs she wont fire. Cranks fine but no longer tries to start.

Ive heard that pulling the codes can cause a reset of the ecm and is it possible that this is causing my no-fire due to the knock from the dead cylinder? Any ideas would be appreciated to nurse her home rather than trailer her.

So I have a found I have a very weak spark combined with a #1cyl at 50psi as well so at this point I can only conclude my disty failed shortly after my engine. SO the next question as sourcing a 2.5 might take too long to get a good one in place, I do know of a perfect condition k8 w/ less then 60k on the clock. Only hickup was it was an atx engine, any things you all might know off that need to be swapped to drop it into an atx car besides the flywheel? Thanks

Sorry to hear about your troubles first of all. You can only reset/clear an ECU by removing the negitive wire to your battery and pressing the brake for 10+ seconds. This uses all the residual energy left in the system and resets your codes.

You said your pulling the engine from and atx and putting it into an atx? I think you meant atx into an mtx. My ZE, along with many others on this site were all atx mounted. Just swap your flywheel onto it and everything else should work that I know of. Do yourself a favor and resurface that flywheel and look into getting a new clutch as well. Do it once, do it right!! Good luck :)

Lots of info here on ATX to MTX swap as I'm sure you know. Consensus has always been having a donor car is the best approach.

I recall someone on here just offered a good K8 up for free??? Not sure who it was.

Ty Pritchett,
Yea I mean putting a motor from a ATX car back into my MTX equipped car. Just wanted to make sure if I needed to preorder and coolant sensors and such if I needed to swap them. And yea that was me that had the spare k8, Im still debating using it just to get my car running versus putting in a KL while I have the chance, although right now I have to balance the clock and the account before this takes too long.
