5th gear trouble after BP & G series mtx swap

Hey all, here's my problem. I have done a BP and G series MTX swap into my 93 RS. Transmission is from a 93 escort GT. Clutch is brand new (See my worklog http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.ph ... 1&start=60) Gears 1-4 shift and work fine, when I go into 5th I hear a slight grinding noise and it won't engage. Today I took off the end cap of the bell housing to try and swap the 5th gear with one from a 626 (for better miliage too) and 5th gear looked fine.

I didn't do the swap, just put the cap back with gasket maker. Not sure what else could be the problem, I have a eBay short shifter and the round cylindrical part that fits into the shift linkage pops up and isn't stable. Not sure if maybe the linkage isn't maneuvering correctly fo engage 5th... What else could it be?

Make sure you have enough gearoil in the trans. When the fluid is lower than normal, 5th gear is the most affected. If the fluid is ok, then there could be issues with the shift fork or other related components inside the housing.

Or the syncros are totally shot.

The gears are always engaged, as you see, when you shift (or try) you're trying to mesh dog teeth, and if the shafts are spinning at different speeds... its grinds. Thats where synchros come in, they make stuff rotate at the same speed.

could try holding it lightly on the gate and revving it up a bit, it might pop in. Just a gentle rev, go up/down 1k RPM. Or hold it on the gate and clutch in and out a few times, maybe while playing on the gas a bit.
