I need to replace my front passengers side wheel bearing, have found a lot of info on the board so far but still have a few unanswered questions "I want to find out if it is worth the hassle doing it myself"

First problem is to get the nut off, but i have a pipe to put on the wrench for extra leverage, if that fails ill just cut and break the nut off..

After loosening the other things, i should be able to pull the steering knuckle from the CV/shaft.

But getting the hub out of the bearing and the bearing out of the steering knuckle, can i use a socket and hammer for this?

And can i put the new bearing in using a socket and a wice?
I dont have a press..

Last questions as the manual lacks some of the finer details for this..
When pressing in the new bearing, is there some certain point to aim for, or should it just be pressed in as far as it goes? I guess theres some sort of shoulder inside the steering knuckle?

And the hub, same question?

If i can do it myself id prefer that, so any help appreciated

Get a press and do it right, or pay someone to do it right. No point in half-assing something like a wheel bearing. Besides, there's no guarantee that the bearing would seat right with a socket and vice(?).

And you might wreck it if you don't push exactly on the outer race. Just go to any shop and bring your knuckle and bearing and a $20 and should be fine.

Even if you had a press of your own I wouldn't recommend doing this yourself unless you have some experience doing wheel bearings. It's really easy to screw up a set of bearings.

I got lucky Lodco did it for free. And it only took them less then 5 mins.

is a 6ton (a frame ) press strong enough to replace the bearing?

Probably. I think the one I use is only 3 ton.

I used my 6 ton press to replace the bearing but I still have a howling, when decelerating and when go up into my parking garage.

So did i screw up the new bearing?
I did forget to put oil on the wheel seal and i can hear a slight rub from that when i roll the wheel with car up in the air.

Could anything else be causing the howl?

There's a decent chance you didn't press the bearing in perfectly straight. And without the seal there's nothing to stop dirt and water from getting in the back side of the the spindle. The bearing will not last long without the seal.

I put the seal in but i forgot to apply some oil to it so it is making a rubbing sound when the wheel is moving slowly. this is in addition to the howl that i hear when decelerating (in and out of gear) and also I hear it going up in my garage and only after the car has been driven for at least 10 minutes.


my dad noticed tonight that the passenger wheel (opposite the one i replaced the bearing) was not spinning with the car on jacks and in gear so I loosed up the brake bolts a tiny bit and it was able to move properly. i guess i will find our shortly if the howl may have just been the passenger brake when it gets hot and too tight.

i may have to replace or at least re grease the slides in the caliper.
