Code 2, won't start, no spark.

Post by Polonius »

So, my car spontaneously decided to quit. Ran fine just before, but now it won't start. Cranks strongly.

Battery terminals have good connection.

No spark from ignition coil. Connector going to it gets the proper voltage, though.

No CEL, but tried pulling codes anyway - I get code 2.

Checked voltages at the Crank Angle Sensor connector by connecting them to ground. One wire was 0, next was 12V, next 5, last 5.

Brand new ignition coil. Wire to disty is good, spark plugs/wires good.

I pulled apart the disty tonight, but couldn't really tell what the Crank Angle Sensor was supposed to look like in detail.

Oh, I checked continuity from the Crank Angle Sensor to the ECU, and all four were good.0

Before I go spending the $ on a disty is there anything else I should check?

Check the FS section to see is a member will sell you one for less than a store.

Its definately the distributor. You can't LOOK and see if the hall effect sensors are broken, and you can't SEE if the ignitor is broken... they're solid state electronics. You can eyeball a transistor all day and never know if its burnt open.

I have two spare T0T57071's

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm guessing T0T57071 is the part number?

Hehe... I was eyeballing the rotor-type thing that swipes past the magnet.

I'll be in Edmonton next weekend, so I'll hit the Pick'n'Pull and grab one. There's not a lot of variation between them is there? As long as I grab a pre-94 SOHC B6 disty I'm good, right?

Oh, I'm sorry. I assumed you were running the v6 motor...

On the B6 SOHC, the distributor doesn't usually go, but it happens. Code 2 is still crank angle sensor... so if the plug on the distributor seems good, then it will be the distributor.

I wish!

Plug on the distributor... = The electrical connector?

Alright!

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. When it WAS running, (last month when it mysteriously decided to run again) the spark out of the ignition coil was mostly orange with a bit of blue. I suppose it could have been a weakened battery from starting it for a week with no recharge.... But I'm thinking for the price of a junkyard ignitor I may as well replace that too....

Thanks Ryan. Just got my "new" distributor in and she's running fine again. (minus the usual low compression on a cylinder. :P )
