So I go to a pick and pull I'm cruising around, like Ya would and after checking out 3-4 MX-3s for parts I see this crappy looking black one. Ok It's not a 94 so I don't care about the disty and there's no window switch. I'm about to leave when I catch something out of the corner of my eye. The intake isn't right,,,or is it. I take a closer look and after checking the head codes I see KL31-101 and the other KL31-1A1. My oh my so now I'm ripping the engine down. I have the curved neck intake complete (for $10 dollars) and I'm now about to pull the heads off (again $10 dollars each). Once I get the heads off I'll check out the block and if it looks good I'll return after Holidays to get that. Total cost to me for this ZE will probably be around $50 bucks. BEAT THAT RYAN. :D I'm pretty sure I know this car and the engine was put in about 3 years ago. Oh ya it has headers on it to boot.

Pics to follow.

Don't think I could beat that, a whole engine for $50 :P

But I might be interested in buying that manifold off of you :P

Did it have KL31 cams too? If not it was just a KL from a 95 millenia.

I found a real KL31 ZE in the junkyard awhile back. it's in a ZE 323 locally now.

he said the head codes were legit... even if it didn't have kl31 cams it doesn't mean it wasn't a real ze  KL01 cams are just as legit

Mark, you may have me on rare accessory knowledge, but in the engine and performance department, I'm pretty sure I've done more swaps and bought more imported KLs than you will ever imagine.

95 USDM Millenias came with KL31 heads, KL01 cams, and regular DE compression. That's why I ask, it may not be JDM at all.

As for the KL31 "true ZE" debate it's been dyno proven that a KL31 cammed straight neck ZE makes more power than the KL01 cammed curve neck ZEs. Even when swapping IMs back and forth.

And the "ZEs" that come over today are almost 100% curve necks that have KL01 cams and KL01 heads and I'm not even 100% sure they still have the higher compression. Unless you get a straight neck KL31 cammed ZE from your importer you're pretty much buying a nice low miles motor and not much more.

I've seen just about every flavor of "ZE" over the years doing swaps for people and I prefer the "KL31 ZE" when I can get one. If I'm not mistaken, that motor only came in the MX6 over there which stopped production 10 years ago making it a rarity these days and usually comes with more miles if you can find one.

sorry everyone - I won't ever bring up my freak motor again since it's one of a kind... :freak:
I'll just treasure the thought in my heart forever that I have a super rare klze variant that's as fast or faster than any other kl-31 klze

back on topic... Regardless if it's JDM or not, nice find Dan!

Not sure if that's sarcasm or not, but the tiny font size was amusing.

I'm still interested to know if he found a 95 millenia motor or an actual JDM KL.

KL31 1A1 and Kl31 101 right on the heads.

So I worked me hole off to pull that sucker out in the scrappers yard. I got the guy to put the car on the rack and torch the axles, exhaust, trans linkage and one stubborn rear mount bolt. He used a big fork lift and we got her out. Took me from 10:00 till around 2:30 to get her disconnected and out and that included an hour for lunch. lol This makes around 5-6 I've pulled in the last two years. Getting better at it. lol
Total cost for the engine with disty starter etc and trans including their helping with the torching and lifting. $160. Not bad for a ZE and trans. I'd crap my pants if I put an axle in and both side of the trans turned the same way. lol That would be a cherry on the cake eh.

I was told that alot of the "ZE's" are comming from aussyland, which have no restrictions on their milage.

I've never heard of any "restrictions" but I have heard they grade the engines. Tiger Jap I heard buys B grade but then again this could be a total crock of sh*t. Best bet I think is the colour of the metal under the valve covers and of course no sludge.
