SuperK's New Hobby! Er, House!

Post by SuperK »

So SuperK's new Hobby is his House. Doesn't mean he's forsaken his MX-3's. no they have a new garage, so they're currently happy.

Well, I purchased the house for 125,900, and it's appraised for 139k. You all've seen the other post, so whatever. Anyways, after a month of remodeling we've come to a brief pause (Read: Ran out of money) so I thought I'd post up my progress so far! Here's some before/after pictures to show you what it looked like and it's current progress. This will also show you what it looks like not to have a photostitching application and being too poor to purchase a wide angle lens:

Image

Image

I mean it's not a terrible house, but look at the wasted space! the kitchen has tons of "I'm not doing anything" space. And all the ANGLES. I mean, this house puts The Angle Man to shame! there's angles at the bay, angles at the fireplace angles at the boxed beam and angles after the beam.

So we took out the wall:

Image

It being a split level foyer it has the landing area, which is kinda ugly and it takes so much space. look at the cheap half wall in place of a proper railing/baluster. It makes everything feel so closed off, the steps small, and the carpet just looks CHEAP.

So how bout we do something to open it up? How bout that little port hole of a window above the door? Aye aye captain, is this a ship? Hmmm Lets change it!

Image

Image

Nothing's painted yet so eh. Red wood stairs, newells and rails, redid landing, half round arch and a nice door with some proper sidelights, topped with oil rubbed copper iron balusters. It'll look much better after paint.

And the angled ceiling? bye bye.

Image

This is a coffered ceiling. on each corners are indirect flourescent lighting which angle up to give a soft light in the house... or rather, make it daylight in there.

I got some awesome deals on everything too. I'm going all Low E glass to conserve. There was a huge leaky aluminum 6ft sliding glass door, I got a smaller vinyl door to replace it with...

Low E2 Vinyl Sliding Glass door - 200
New Door (Slab only, Priced at lowes, 631) - 100
Frame - 75 / sidelights - 120/each
Half Round window (low e) - 137 (Sucker's over 400 bucks new!)

Next is to tear out the kitchen. I'm doing raised panel maple cabinetry, the top doors will be ceiling height, then I'll wrap around and create a bar area to separate the living/kitchen area, granite (or a synth granite) countertops then reinstall the fireplace with built-in-the-wall bookcasing side-by-side the fireplace. Above the mantle will sit a screen which I created and have my projector project there.

But as for now, I ran out of my money. Just waiting for my 8k to come in for my rebate, yay! I'm poor!

wow, good job man. I just signed paper's for my 3400sq ft house, 3 floor built in 1979. Need's alot of work but a good deal for 190,000 down from 215,000. Housing in BC is very high and only going up. Keep up the good work and keep us updated, I like seeing what people do to houses.

Holy crap that looks awesome. GOod work.

Dali - how the hell is 210k for a 3400SQ house expensive???

Around here, 1200-1700SQ houses go for that...and they're ~50yrs old. Granted you can get 2200SQ houses by looking in other places, but they're still 250k. 3400 will cost more than 600k!

Its crap!

The garage looks like a mess with two beautiful mx-3's resting in there. Once I get some stuff cleared out on thursday and friday I'll get some more pictures.
I LOVE having a garage though. I almost don't care about the rest of the house. I HAVE A GARAGE!

Congrats on the house, since its your place now with lots of angles, its only right to park the 3 in the garage at a angle. ENJOY!

Nice house dude. You did great on it. It's pretty much exact copy of my house and we've paid much more for it. I noticed houses in TN are way cheaper compared to WA for same house. I would love to live there but can't stand summer heat. Besides scenery over here is nice, lots of mountains, rivers and I'm only 4 hrs from the ocean

That house would be $200,000+ in Canada. But then houses should be cheap right now in the States with the virtual collapse of the real estate market. You need to tke it easy with the reno's, everything in it's time. Tell your wife painting is messy so painting in the nude just makes sense. They fall for that line every time. Happy Painting.

The ceiling is time consuming. It takes a LOT of work. Difficult? Well, getting your measurements out with the grids and stuff... OK yeah the ceiling is difficult. But not impossible. If you ever desired to do one I could walk you through it as I got a picture catalog and such I could share what we did with you but yeah, it's pretty hard.

I moved in the furniture as I am waiting for my funding to show up one day in the mail. Here's what it's going to sort of look like, but of course it needs paint, I am replacing the windows on the octagon and the carpet:

Image

Image

Underneath the projector screen will be the fireplace with a thin but modern hearth and on each side the built-in-the-wall bookcase with stained shelving. So the bookcase will be flush with the rest of the wall. So we're not terribly concerned with painting it as we're going to be ripping it out again anyways. The walls will be painted a lighter cappuccino color called "hopsack?" or something. Not so dark and pinkey as what they are now... but a little darker than the ceiling.
And yes, the projector screen is crooked. I am not concerned. but I did make the screen myself! It's like a picture frame. It'll get removed during the construction so I'm just leaving it as it is.

And the dining room area is shaping up pretty cozy:
Image

*note the cabinets will be replaced. the top cabinets will be tall ceiling-height maple with a dark reddish brownish stain, darker than the landing. Next to the fridge will start a stained raised panel pantry, then wraps around in a U shape as it's going to be a bar area as well. granite or a type of synth granite will be the countertop of choice. and the rest of the kitchen walls will be painted green to match the dining.
