won't start after changing distrbutor cap and rotor

Post by SE MX-3 »

ive had problems with misfiring/idle for a while now and decided to start by changing my distributor cap and rotor. after swapping the parts, the car wouldnt start. there is power, but no cranking. i changed the parts back to the originals with no luck. any ideas?

The car cranking has nothing to do with the distributor...

You could crank the engine all day with just a starter and a charged battery.

^^^ If the rotor isn't on the same way it won't run it's very touchy that way. Get a buddy to try turning it to differnt spots while you try and start it. See what happens from there. Should always mark where they were before changing.

It sounds like you wore your battery down, if it won't even crank anymore. Get the battery charged, and try again for just a few seconds. If it doesn't start, check for spark.

check how much voltage you have at your battery first with a multimeter. You can pick up one from harbor freight for less than $10, handy little tool.

if the battery is fully charged and the starter will not engage then check the starter solenoid see if that has failed or see if the power wire for the starter solenoid has gotten broken off, it sits below the distributor area and if one was not careful they could have hit it and broke it off.
