Question About Cold Air Intake???

Post by the_twig_187 »

Hello Friends

I have seen a lot of engine bay pics with cold air intakes, my question regards wither you need to run new piping from the new cone filter all the way up to the intake manifold? Most of the pictures I have seen, it appears that the old "existing" plastic piping remained in place and it looks like just the old filter housing was replaced with the new cone air filter.

long story short: I would like to know if all I should buy is the cone filter or the entire filter piping set up?

any out there have any info or experience with this, your advice would be much appreciated

This is my CAI:

I'm using the RX7 VAF, with eBay cold air. It had the existing holes for the throttle body tube, and the engine tube.

That’s awesome Dark_Rider2k3...thank you so much for the pic and the info... that is exactly what I would like to do for my car

so to confirm: you got the VAF from a mazda RX-7, and the cold air from ebay had all the proper tubing and connectors.

Questions: (1) did the cold air pipe come pre-fabricated (ie. you didn’t have to weld any of the metal together) it was just plug and play/direct bolt on?
(2) does it matter the year of RX-7 for the VAF? or are they all the same?

thank you so much your advice and experience is extremely helpful

1. The intake tubing came the way you see it. It came with the rubber as well. So yes it was plug-and-play.

2. You don't necessarily have to have an RX-7 VAF. The stock VAF works fine, but I broke mine and was told the RX7's VAF is the best of them all. I'm not sure of the year (I think late 80's/early 90's), but you want to look for a "B" Code on the VAF (like the B6 has an S on the VAF... that will be a B for the RX7).

I took the coolant tank out temporarily to get the cone filter down, hooked up all the intake, and then re-installed the coolant tank.

yeah some members have moved theirs. I didn't really see a need and I kinda liked it over there.
