Light Legality

Post by PilotSmack89 »

Hi guys n' gals,

So I've seen a few threads on this subject, but I haven't been able to get a definitive answer:

There are some threads on some projectors that claim to be legal, but aren't becuse of how the lights are positioned... what i wanna know is where you find if they're legal or not.

Thanks,
Smack

The projectors with the LEDs horizontal aren't DOT certified, so technically illegal. The ones with the vertical LEDs are DOT certified.

^YOu have that backwards sir. The projector headlight w/ the LEDs on the inside, horizonal have DOT certified stamped on the lens. THe ones w/ the vertical LEDs along the OUTSIDE DO NOT, AFAIK.

I have the horizontal style, and mine do indeed say DOT certified.

Regardless, I don't think it will matter unless you are using purple HID's, in which case the cops will have a reason to pull you over.

Yep When I was pulled over for my tail lights being tinted (I showed him in the book there actually totally LEGAL) he looked at my projectors and said ok those look fine.... Although they were NOT the DOT ones... So it's all up to how indepth the cop wants to go.

Hahaha well guys hate having their mistakes shoved in their faces, so I'm pretty sure he didn't want to risk getting shot down on the headlights too.

What happens if you want to build your own lights?
Do you have to certify them (can a normal person even do that), or is there some kind of loophole to get you off the hook? :?

You can probably get them certified if you're willing to spend time and money, but otherwise I doubt they'll be legal. But you can always trick the cops if you're doing something like a projector retrofit and keep the original lens.

Ya there is, make sure that you build your own guts nice and straight, and put a dot lens on there, or something to that effect, there was a lot of guys in the "OLD" days that made their own projectors.
