My KLZE in a Boat

Hi Everyone,

I was at the last western annual MX-3 Meet in Kelowna, BC and a few of us guys were playing with some ideas. I have a white MX-3 which has a beautifully rebuilt KLZE in it, but the car is unfortunately rusting to pieces. (Didn't know it came from Ontario until it was too late). Anyways, before I floor it one day, and the engine breaks off the frame and takes off down the road, I thought it would be really cool to throw the KLZE into a boat I have.

Now the boat is nothing special. Just an old 1970s K&C Thermoglass, previously equipped with a Volvo Stern-drive engine. It has no engine or sterndrive in it currently and would need all new controls and wiring anyways.

My theory is that I could just get my hands on a new Stern Drive, get a custom shaft made to match up to my KLZE, connect to a new boat style cooling system, utilize the KL36 ECU I have and part of the engine harness, modify some headers to run out the lower stern of the boat, and probably a few other items I can't think of at the moment.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but thought it might just be a cool enough of an idea to work with. Let me know your thoughts. I still have another KLZE equipped MX-3 in beautiful condition, so I really have no need for two of them.

When I was working in Virginia, there was an boat with an outboard Honda 225 w/vtec. It was a V6 shoved in there.

Apparently it makes 200hp

There's no reason to believe that you can't make it work. They're strong motors and can rev all day long, as long as you don't go beyond redline, I think it would make a good canditate.

Well since this is a Stern-drive setup, it should make this relatively simple from the fitment side of things. If I can find myself a sterndrive assembly for a decent price, I will surely consider this.

It is hard to say. It is definitely a lot of work, but not impossible. Easier than a KLZE turbo upgrade in my opinion, but it can be difficult as it hasn't been done before. Just need to fall back on my experience with mechanical and electrical to get this right. Hopefully Curt and maybe even Tyler from Williams Lake in BC can lend some assistance when needed. But this will be a good use for that good engine.

I mentioned it to him before, but didn't get much of a response. I think boats aren't really his forte. Not really mine either, but I have the boat... might as well do something with it. ;)
